It is a rare individual who has not been personally impacted by suicide. As research and dialogue continues to grow around this oft-misunderstood cause of death, there are enormous opportunities to empower our society to have a stake in this public health issue.
At Forefront, we know that most suicides are preventable and that the time to act is now. A social impact center at the University of Washington School of Social Work, Forefront is focused on ending suicide by championing suicide prevention, leading systemic change, and advocating for the many family and community members affected.
Forefront's Wheel of Change
As of early 2017, Forefront has engaged over 15,000 students, patients, and community members statewide (and beyond).
Championing Systemic Change: By educating state and local government, Forefront has rallied around the passage of six suicide prevention bills with support from both sides of the aisle, and organizations with differing viewpoints. Our consultation to healthcare systems will bringing life-saving tools, training, and protocols to thousands of medical providers statewide.
Individuals and Communities Take Sustainable Action to Prevent Suicide: Over 8,500 community members statewide now have life-saving suicide awareness, intervention, and response skills through training by Forefront. Forefront in the Schools empowers cohorts of local high schools in a three-year journey of culture transformation. The Safer Homes Suicide Aware campaign kicks off in Fall 2017, engaging all types of professionals and community members to use suicide prevention best practices.
Restoring Hope: Engaging and supporting all types of individuals through turnkey programs like Forefront Cares bereavement support and peer-to-peer mentoring program, the Community Organizers program for community advocates, and helping local news media shape sensitive, accurate, and resource-oriented coverage about suicides.
OUR MISSION: To empower individuals and communities to take sustainable action to prevent suicide, champion systemic change, and restore hope.
