Suicide Prevention Training FAQs

What training programs meet Washington State’s requirements?
Forefront offers AMSR and safeTALK, which meet the legislative mandate for ESHB 2366.  A full list of approved training programs that meet the legislative intent of the Matt Adler Act can be found at the Washington State Department of Health Website.

Why did you choose these two trainings to offer vs. the others on the model list?
Forefront used these three criteria in selecting AMSR and safeTALK:

  1. Training program needs to be listed on the Best Practice Registry (www.sprc.org);
  2. Training program needs to include interactive exercises and role-play practice as learning opportunities to meet various learning styles; and
  3. If delivered in person, class size needs to be under 100 participants.

Based on that criteria, are there any other trainings Forefront recommends?

Yes, there are several other trainings in the Washington state that Forefront recommends:

How long is the training?
AMSR is 6.25 hours in length; safeTALK is 3 hours.

How do I know if I need 3 or 6 hours of training?
If you are a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Mental Health Counselor, Psychologist, Advanced Social Worker or Independent Clinical Social Worker you are required to receive six (6) hours of training in suicide assessment, management and treatment every six years in order to renew your license.  If you are a licensed Occupational Therapist, Chemical Dependency Professional, or Educational Staff Associate (ESA) you need three (3) hours every six years.

Can I take two different 3-hour workshops (or three 2-hour workshops) to meet the 6-hour requirement?
No, the legislation requires that the training be offered by one provider.

Are continuing education credits provided for these workshops?
Yes, Forefront has secured CEUs from the National Association of Social Workers - Washington Chapter and the Washington State Psychological Association.  Each participant who attends the full training will receive a certificate with the number of units earned.

What materials do you provide the participants?
AMSR participants receive a 40+ page manual; safeTALK participants receive a resource workbook.

What are the qualifications of the Forefront-approved trainers?
Each AMSR and safeTALK trainer has attended a Training of Trainers and conducted at least one provisional workshop under the supervision of Sue Eastgard, Master Trainer and Forefront co-founder.
